Liverpool are close to agreeing a deal for their fifth signing of the summer, according to The Times journalist Paul Joyce.
The Reds have been very active in this transfer market with the signings of Jeremie Frimpong, Armin Pecsi, Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez for a combined transfer fee that is close to £200m.
Although signed last summer, Giorgi Mamardashvili is another player who is set to join Liverpool this summer.
The Georgian shotstopper is seen as a direct replacement for the departed second-choice goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, who joined Brentford earlier this summer.
Kelleher was the first among three goalkeeper exits from Liverpool this summer, with Vít?zslav Jaroš (on loan at Ajax) and Harvey Davies (on loan at Crawley Town) soon departing the club.
The departures have created a gap in the Liverpool first team, with Arne Slot requiring a third-choice goalkeeper to serve as cover for Alisson and Mamardashvili.
Initially, it was thought that youngster Armin Pecsi would serve as the club’s third-choice goalie.
But the latest report suggests that Liverpool invested in him for the future.
This is so because, reliable journalist Paul Joyce has revealed that Liverpool are close to signing goalkeeper Freddie Woodman on a free transfer from Preston North End.
“Liverpool close to signing goalkeeper Freddie Woodman on free transfer from Preston North End,” the journalist wrote for The Times.
“The goalkeeper will provide cover for Alisson and Giorgi Mamardashvili, with Jaros and Davies joining Ajax and Crawley Town on loan next season.
He kept 13 clean sheets in 37 league appearances.
His performances have seemingly impressed the hierarchy at Anfield, putting him in the frame for a move to Liverpool.
The 28-year-old has previously played in the Premier League with Newcastle United, who sold him in 2022 after a number of underwhelming loan stints away from St James’ Park.
Woodman signed a three-year deal at Deepdale, but his contract expired at the end of the season, making him an appealing target.
Liverpool have now made a move for him, and he is set to provide cover for Alisson and Giorgi Mamardashvili
